How the Protection of State Information Bill could work

We are all pretty unhappy about the Protection of State Information Bill and it’s passing through parliament in yesterdays vote.  If you didn’t know, it was quite a resounding defeat for those opposing the bill.  Essentially it allows the state to protect any information that it deems not to be allowed in the public domain.  It’s quite riduculous since we have so many corrupt officials and this bill now allows them to prosecute media houses for publishing so-called protected state information.

But it is all that bad?  Yes, it pretty much is, but there is a way that it could work, quite a simple way in fact.  When the information being scrutinised refers to a certain member of a particular party, then that party’s delegates should abstain from the decision process.

Good idea, bad idea?  What are your thoughts?

  • Very clever there, but how would/ will make sure if those members of anc or any party face the law?
