Latest on Durban’s 2010 Stadium
A few of us bloggers were invited along for a tour of the Durban 2010 Soccer Stadium. What an absolute marvel this structure is.
We were briefly … uh … well … briefed about safety procedures, death rates, injury rates and to not walk and talk on our phones at the same time. With formalities out the way, and Mike Suttcliffe clearing the deck, we entered the stadium.
The sheer size of the stadium blows you away immediately. There is a hive of activity (although rather quiet today, as constructions slows from about 12pm when guys go home early) around the stadium with all sorts of pushing, shoving, drilling and grinding going on.
On entering the stadium auditorium through the small entrance, I was completely blown away by the beauty of the stadium inside. It’s very open, and airy and you just dont feel clostraphobic at all.
The construction has come along way in the last 2 years, and apparently they are way ahead of schedule.
Some interesting things to note. There will be a bridge swing from the one side of the main arch. Not sure how it will work, but that’s pretty cool. There is an adventure walk up the arch from the south end, that looks pretty damn scary to me. Then of course there is the 25-seater cable car which will take people to the top of the arch for a panoramic view of durban.
